Side Project

2020

Digital-collages chronicling controversies in a relationship involving sex. Side project is a collection of ten 8-page zines documenting the inability to come to terms with the ‘importance’ of sex in a long-term romantic queer relationship. The term ‘side’ describes a person in the gay community who does not identify as a top, bottom, or vers (heterosexual constructs of the binary sexual positions or roles). This puts strain on a relationship, and imparts guilt and frustration on both partners.

These busy, loud, convoluted zines wed journal-like entries from times of high tension during this relationship to photographs that bumble over one another, each trying to be heard and rationalized as being their own scene. The words and phrases that wind through the pages are a mishegas of thoughts, hypothetical conversations, and even lyrics that felt impactful during the situations that lead to the creation of each issue.
